Express Yourself: Why Style Will Always Be Important

There is a reason why Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band’s song “Express Yourself” has been covered by groups such as N.W.A., sampled, and featured in movies since its inception. Beyond the melody being incredibly catchy, the sentiment “express yourself” still rings true today — and probably more so than it has ever before. There is something about being yourself that is incredibly powerful, liberating, and completely necessary. Before we discuss what style is and why it is important. Let us look at what it is not. 

Style is Not Fashion

Style is something that is timeless and not bound to current trends. For example, motorcycle clubs such as the 59 club who sported the badass style of combat boots and leather jackets have a style that isn’t bound by the demands of time or fashion. Why do you think the fashion industry loves to reinvent old looks and styles? True style is not dictated by what is fashionable. 

Style is Not Consumerism

Style isn’t consumerism either. There are many brands that survive on the demand of the latest trends on the runway, and goad their customers to buy while it’s hot. However, style isn’t about how much you have, but what you do with what you have. Whether you live comfortably or you scrape by on paycheck to paycheck, everyone can express themselves. For example, college kids who buy their clothes from local thrift stores may have better style than those who can afford designer lines. Style can be expensive and it can be cheap — it’s all about how you wear it. 

Style is Personal

The reason why style is timeless and not dependent on how much money you have, is that style is personal. The clothes a person wears, the way they style their hair, and even how they walk can be expressions of who they are, and how they wish to present themselves to the world. A Psychology Today article says: 

“With style, we stamp our personal identity on an arrangement of things. And our closets always seem full of possibilities — it just depends on what aspect of our identity we want to make palpable in clothes that day.”

The same article goes on to say: 

“Style is a little excursion into self-expression through what you choose to wear, a life-affirming expression of your character and spirit.” 

Style is Creative

Because style is personal, it is also creative. Even if you don’t consider yourself to be a “creative person,” putting on clothes everyday is a creative act as you are creating an outfit. If you are more creatively inclined, your personal style can be a fun way to show the world who you are and to experiment with color, patterns, textures, accessories, and hair styles. Even if you have to wear a uniform or particular style of dress to work, how you put those outfits together, how you tie your tie, and even how you accessorize that uniform is a way to be expressive.  

Style Provides a Sense of Control

Choosing how your hair will be styled, what clothes you wear, and even if you put tattoos on your body is a means of feeling a sense of control. The Psychology Today article quoted above goes on to say: 

“[Personal style] always suggests that you are in control of your personal environment. That’s one reason why it is an invaluable tool in moving through the world.” 

It not only offers us the feelings of control, but it can also communicate to others that we have our lives, jobs, and other aspects of our life under control.
